Brighton & Hove City Charrette 3 – Friday 19th October 2018

Designing the future of Brighton & Hove

The third annual City Charrette took place at Hove Town Hall on Friday 19th October. The City Charrette 3, a partnership between Design South East, Brighton & Hove City Council and Design Brighton brought local designers, planning professionals and students from Brighton University together to create design proposals for five key sites across the city. All sites were chosen by the city council, with the aim of producing design solutions and guiding principles for each one.  Each team worked on one relevant project and considered practical issues such as proposed routes, connections, building functions, structural forms and public spaces.

After a productive day with over 100 people taking part, including an evening stakeholder event involving community groups and other locals, we are now consolidating information and hope this can help inform future planning guidance. This was a great way to build relationships with the local communities and we look forward to future collaborations.

Design South East coordinates the designPLACE review service for Brighton & Hove City Council, bringing together a panel of independent, built environment experts to review major development proposals. With an overall ambition to improve design standards, an annual design workshop known as a ‘charrette’ is run as part of this service with an aim to involve the wider community in the debate.

This year’s charrette, sponsored by Stickland Wright Architects, VU.CITY and First Base Business, was constructed in collaboration with Design Brighton –  organisers of the new urban design festival due to take place in October 2019. Design Brighton was founded by the Cowell Consulting Group and Stickland Wright Architects.

Final proposals from the charrette were presented at the event, and then exhibited at the official Design Brighton launch at the i360 on 24 October 2018.
