Jonathan McDowell
Jonathan McDowell is an architect and director of Matter Architecture, which he established with Roland Karthaus in 2016. The RIBA Chartered Practice is based in Bethnal Green, London. Matter is undertaking a wide range of projects across varied sectors and scales of architecture including masterplanning, housing, community buildings, education and bridges. Jonathan was formerly partner at McDowell+Benedetti, which over 20 years established an international reputation for design excellence, winning numerous prestigious awards and competitions with its projects being published widely in the UK and abroad.
He is a member of bothHackney and Islington Design Review Panels, and previously of the Yorkshire & Humber Regional DRP, as well as acting as a CABE Enabler from 2001-2011. He is an RIBA Competitions Architect Adviser and juror on numerous international and UK awards panels. He has taught and lectured at schools of architecture, is an External Examiner at the University of East London, and a Professional Studies Adviser at the University of Cambridge. Born in Brunei, he studied architecture at the University of Cambridge and at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (USA). He is a Fellow of the RSA
