Michál Cohen

Michál was born and educated in South Africa, moved to London and set up Walters & Cohen with Cindy Walters in 1994.
The practices portfolio comprises work in the education, cultural, leisure and residential sectors; education in particular has come to be Michál’s speciality, with many buildings receiving awards and appreciation for their function as well as aesthetic quality. Projects of note include Lairdsland Primary School in Glasgow, which also serves as a reference school design for the Scottish Futures Trust; a performing arts centre for the Lady Eleanor Holles School; a gym and occupational health centre in the Bank of England; a community art gallery in Durban, and currently, a substantial general teaching building at St Paul’s School in Barnes.
In 2012 Michál and Cindy won AJ’s inaugural Woman Architect of the Year Award, which celebrated the ethos of the practice as much as their architecture.
Michál’s interest in research, government policy and best practice around the world makes her a knowledgeable and valuable member of the design panel.  She is also a trustee for the Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
